Outside Training
Outside Training is considered to be any classes, activities, or trainings not provided by the UA 290 JATC.
From the U.A. Union Local No. 290 Plumber, Steamfitter and Shipfitter Industry Educational Reimbursement, Scholarship, and Vacation Trust Educational Reimbursement Benefit notice mailed to all members in May 2025-
“B. Outside Training
Outside training is an area where there have been many questions about what is eligible. If you intend to seek credit for outside training, please read this section closely. Outside training must be pre-approved by the Outside Training Committee. The Outside Training Committee consists of Trustees from ERSV Trust and employees of the JATC. They are familiar with journeyman training and are responsible for approving classes not provided for by the JATC.
Requests to cover outside training should be submitted in advance of the training to:
For outside training to be eligible for educational reimbursement benefits, all of the following must occur:
The training course must be approved in advance by the Outside Training Committee;
The training must be completed within 60 days of the Outside Training Commitee’s approval;
A written request for credit must be submitted electronically within 30 days with a copy of the Outside Training Committee’s approval. A post class survey from the Outside Training Committee must be completed and submitted to the JATC for approval. Submit the documents listed in this bullet point to: journeyman.training@290tech.edu”
Pre-approved Outside Training Activities by the ERSV Trust -
E-Board (12hr annual max)
Stewards Class (8hr annual max)
COMET I & II (8hr annual max)
IAMPO Trainings (Attendees must submit their Certificates of Attendance to the Outside Training Commitee within 30 days of completion to receive credit)
All other committee meetings and events not hosted by 290 Training Center must be approved by the Outside Training Committee.
Yearly Maximum-
Of the 24 hours of annual training, a maximum of 16 hours of training may come from outside training, weld shop, or active member wellness course. Of this 16 hour sub-limit, a maximum if 8 hours can come from active wellness course.
State Credit -
The Training Center cannot report hours to Oregon BCD or Washington L&I for classes that were not hosted by the Training Center. It is the responsibility of the Training provider to report hours for state credit.
